England

There is extensive protection against unlawful discrimination in the UK on grounds of: sex, marital status, race, religion/belief, disability, sexual orientation and age. Protection applies during the recruitment process and immediately on commencement and can also apply following termination (e.g. refusal to give a reference). Compensation for unlawful discrimination is unlimited, but is calculated based on damages/loss. There is no system of punitive damages.

France

Specific data-protection, labor and privacy rules must be followed before setting up a whistle-blowing device or an internet/e-mails monitoring device.

Belgium

No veto right to proceed with an individual dismissal. No obligation to justify an individual dismissal (with some exceptions). Language requirements.

Portugal

The Portuguese jurisdiction provides a high level of protection to the employee, mainly in regard to the termination of the employment agreement. There are special flexible rules applied to companies which hire less than 10 employees and applicable to high executives.
