Public sector pensions

For organisations looking for pensions lawyers who understand the public sector, Wragge & Co is one of the few law firms offering a dedicated sector-focused pensions practice.

Led by partner Paul Carberry, this six-lawyer team advises local authorities, NHS bodies, government departments and contractors on all aspects of public sector pensions law. Acting for both public and private sector clients means clients benefit from advisers able to understand the issues faced by both sides involved in outsourcing projects.

Areas of expertise include the requirements of the Fair Deal guidance, admission agreements, bonds, buyouts, bulk transfer arrangements, fund agreements, governance, ill-health queries, investment issues, NHS Directions, and Transfer Orders.

In 2008, Mike Woodall joined Wragge & Co to provide specialist consultancy advice on public sector pensions strategy. Having spent 14 years as chief pensions office of the £7 billion West Midlands Pension Fund, Mike's appointment adds in-house insight to the team.

The team's involvement in an innovative health sector joint venture helped Wragge & Co win The Lawyer's Employment Team of the Year award last year. They advised Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust on its £250 million pathology services joint venture with Serco.

Other clients include Amey, DEFRA, Fujitsu, the London Borough of Hackney and Sanctuary Housing.
